What it does
Misskey is free server software for a social community with posts, topic channels, shared media and connections to other participating networks. Operators deploy the software and manage member permissions through roles. Members register on a chosen server; hosting and maintenance are separate from the software.
Misskey's roles control feature access and allowances as well as badges. In the Control Panel, use Roles > Role Template for defaults, then create a role and assign it through Moderation > Roles. Check a member's effective settings under Moderation > Overview > Policies.
Priority applies to each policy, not to a whole role. When priorities tie, the more permissive value wins. Manual assignments can expire after a chosen period; conditional assignments follow rules automatically and cannot be manually added or removed.
A community can use topic channels for ongoing discussions and Drive folders to organize uploaded media. Notes support attachments and polls, while Antennas collect posts containing selected keywords.
The Docker Compose installation route requires configuration files, a database initialization and a running server. Choose the domain carefully and keep the existing database when maintaining the service. Members use Register on this server, choose a username and password, and provide an invitation code or email when that server requires them. A username cannot later be changed or reused after account deletion.
Strengths
- Operators can inspect a member's effective permissions
- Manual roles can expire while conditional roles follow eligibility rules
Watch out for
- Equal-priority policy conflicts favor the more permissive setting
- Usernames cannot be changed after registration
Best for
- Community operators who need configurable member permissions and channels
