What it does
Mixamo is Adobe's free online service for rigging humanoid characters and applying library motions. It accepts custom models and provides downloads for use in other 3D applications.
Sign in with a free Adobe ID; a Creative Cloud subscription is unnecessary. Enterprise and Federated IDs are unsupported, as are Adobe IDs registered with a China country code. Adobe permits royalty-free use of Mixamo characters and animations in personal, commercial and nonprofit projects.
For an unrigged character, choose Upload Character and provide FBX, OBJ or ZIP. Embed textures in FBX, or put an OBJ, its material file and textures in a ZIP. Place the wrist, elbow, knee and groin markers, confirm them, and let the rigging process finish. Download the result, or choose Find Animations to add motion. An already rigged upload must be FBX.
The automatic rig expects a bipedal humanoid. Extra limbs, large props and disconnected body parts can obstruct it. Use a neutral pose and remove unrelated scene objects before uploading.
Keep local copies of the model and downloads: the service remembers only the last character and does not keep a history of earlier characters or animations.
Strengths
- Marker placement guides automatic rigging of custom humanoids.
- Library animations can be applied before downloading.
Watch out for
- Automatic rigging is limited to humanoid bipeds.
- There is no history of previous characters or animations.
Best for
- Adding a first rig to a humanoid character
- Applying library motion to character prototypes
