What it does
Mixxx is open-source DJ software for Windows, macOS and Linux, with four decks, tempo and key analysis, looping, effects and controller mappings.
Load your audio files into the library, analyse them for tempo and key, then use the four decks, cues and loops to build a set. A laptop keyboard is enough to start; a controller or timecode-vinyl setup adds its own mapping and audio-routing work.
The download page makes a useful distinction for a performance computer: the stable release is recommended for live use, while beta and development builds are for testing. Mixxx has no paid Pro edition. Choose the operating-system build and check the manual for your particular controller rather than assuming any USB device is ready to use.
Strengths
- Tempo and key analysis help prepare a music library for mixing.
- Keyboard, controller and timecode-vinyl workflows are documented.
Watch out for
- Beta and development builds are not intended for live performances.
Best for
- DJs preparing and performing sets from digital music files
