What it does
MKVToolNix is a toolkit for creating, altering, and inspecting Matroska files. The project provides applications and packages across several desktop operating systems.
Choose MKVToolNix when Matroska is the required container and the task concerns assembling or inspecting its contents. This is a different job from choosing a new video codec: changing a media container does not inherently recode its picture. Consult the toolkit documentation for accepted inputs and stream handling before using it in a larger conversion pipeline.
The mkvmerge documentation describes joining all or selected streams from several source files into a named Matroska output. Track order, language, chapters and tags can be set explicitly. Its WebM mode is narrower: the documented allowed tracks are VP8/VP9 video and Opus/Vorbis audio, with restricted chapter/tag elements. Treat that as a muxing constraint rather than an automatic codec conversion.
