What it does
monetr plans recurring expenses around paydays and shows a Free-To-Use amount after money has been reserved. Hosted access costs US$4 per month after a 30-day trial, or you can run the software yourself without a software fee. Plaid bank connections on the hosted service cover the US and Canada; manual accounts are also available.
Build the plan around payday
For a manual budget, choose Manual > Continue, name the budget and first account, select its currency and starting balance, then create an initial funding schedule. The schedule sets when money is allocated in the budget.
Under Expenses > New Expense, enter the bill amount and next due date, choose a funding schedule and set its repeat interval. For example, a monthly bill can be attached to a fortnightly payday schedule. Free-To-Use subtracts money reserved for expenses and goals from the available account balance. These allocations record a plan; they do not transfer money between bank accounts.
Files or connected accounts
Manual accounts accept OFX uploads, with QFX files also supported subject to format limitations. Open Upload, choose the file and confirm it. Uploads are currently designed for checking accounts and replace the displayed balance with the balance in the file, so an older statement can move that balance backwards. File imports are unavailable for Plaid-connected accounts.
Hosted or self-hosted
The US$4 monthly hosted price includes tax. Its 30-day trial needs no card and allows one Plaid connection; an unsubscribed account becomes inactive when the trial ends. Self-hosting has no application fee, but separate bank-data services can have their own costs. The current source-available licence permits personal self-hosting and restricts competing commercial services.
Strengths
- Funding schedules can shift weekend paydays to the preceding weekday
- An estimated deposit adds a view of money left after planned contributions on the funding timeline
Watch out for
- Imported transactions do not automatically merge with manually entered duplicates
- Payday adjustments do not yet account for bank holidays
Best for
- People whose spending plan follows their paycheck schedule
