What it does

MoneyWell is personal budgeting software for Mac with an iPhone companion. It uses envelope-style buckets to allocate income before spending, with manual accounts, file imports and Direct Connect where a bank supports it. Free Mode has no time limit but allows only 200 transactions; a subscription removes that limit.

MoneyWell's budgeting sequence follows the pay period:

  1. Assign deposits to income buckets.
  2. Fill expense buckets using that income.
  3. Assign withdrawals to the expense buckets.

This keeps the reserved amount visible before the next purchase. The native Mac application brings multiple accounts into one view.

Build a budget that matches your expenses

From the welcome window, choose Start a New Budget. The wizard can ask questions to suggest buckets, create a simple set, or start empty. Choose a currency and decide whether to enable synchronization. You can create manual accounts without selecting a financial institution, or import QFX, OFX, QIF and CSV files.

Events describe an expense's amount and frequency, helping MoneyWell calculate how much its bucket needs. To categorize several past purchases together, select their transactions and drag them onto the appropriate bucket.

Free Mode, subscriptions and sharing

Free Mode permits 200 transactions with no time limit, including synchronization. The US Mac App Store lists US$5.99 monthly or US$49.99 annually for unlimited transactions. Regional prices are set by Apple. If a subscription expires, existing data remains available to view and export. MoneyWell Express for iPhone is included as a free companion.

A synced budget can be shared through File → Manage Budget Sharing and the plus button. Participants need iCloud accounts. Apple's Family Sharing can share the subscription; an invited person outside that family group needs their own subscription for unrestricted use.

Strengths

  • Budget allocation follows deposits and withdrawals
  • Events turn expense amounts and frequency into bucket requirements
  • Existing data remains viewable and exportable after a subscription ends

Watch out for

  • Free Mode stops new entry at 200 transactions
  • Unrestricted sharing outside Apple Family Sharing needs another subscription
  • Direct Connect downloads depend on the bank

Best for

  • Mac households using envelope budgeting around pay periods
  • Apple users sharing a bucket budget with family
