What it does
Moretype publishes Bale, Depot New, Alwyn New, Mic 32 New, Rehn and related families. Its specimens provide character inspection and OpenType controls, with separate desktop, website and application licences.
Bale Mono gives Bale’s family direction a fixed-width rhythm for technical labels or data-heavy layouts. Its specimen has Size and OT Features controls for each style, including fractions, oldstyle figures and small capitals. The character viewer shows the selected glyph’s name, Unicode value and proportions. The page lists Latin Extended coverage and OTF and WOFF2 files.
Other companion designs solve different needs: Depot New has a Condensed branch, while Mic 32 New adds Rounded and Stencil treatments. The “New” names identify revised OpenType releases that were redrawn, respaced and kerned, rather than simply renamed. For installation, the help page starts by unzipping the downloaded package and provides separate Mac and PC instructions.
Desktop rights cover static print, logos and raster images, but not editable or customisable templates distributed to others. Website licences are limited to the named domains and purchased pageviews. An app licence covers one application title, with the fonts protected against extraction. The FAQ also prohibits changing glyph shapes for a logo, so request a custom modification from the foundry when that is part of the brief.
Strengths
- Provides related mono, width and construction variations.
- Bale Mono exposes numeral features and detailed glyph information.
- Explains the revisions behind families carrying the New name.
Watch out for
- Desktop licensing excludes editable templates distributed to others.
- Separate application titles require separate app licences.
- Font and glyph modifications are prohibited, including logo adjustments.
Best for
- Product typography using related sans and mono roles
- Editorial layouts needing detailed numeral styles
