What it does

Project MUSE hosts scholarly books and journals. Some content is open access, while other works require access through a subscribing institution.

Search defaults to material available through your institution or open access, but you can expand results to all content. Check the access indicator before expecting full text. An available book’s HTML, PDF or EPUB route determines how to read it; EPUB must be downloaded and opened in an external reader.

Individuals cannot buy MUSE book collections through the institutional purchasing programme. For a locked book, check your library’s authenticated access. A personal MyMUSE account saves items and searches without adding full-text entitlement.

Strengths

  • Open-access books alongside licensed scholarship

Watch out for

  • Much content depends on institutional access

Best for

  • Reading scholarly books through a library or open-access route
