What it does

MyEtherWallet, or MEW, provides a mobile wallet and a browser portfolio interface for managing crypto assets. The web interface works with supported mobile, hardware and third-party wallets. Creating or accessing a wallet does not create a custodial MEW account, and MEW cannot recover lost wallet credentials.

MEW Portfolio Manager is the browser interface for viewing and using an existing wallet. From the homepage, choose Connect wallet and the supported wallet you want to use. The mobile app offers a separate way to manage assets on iOS or Android. Enkrypt is a related browser-wallet product, and ethVM is an explorer; they are not subscription levels of the portfolio manager.

MEW supports Ethereum and ERC-20 tokens, with additional network and partner features varying by the selected interface. Its web portfolio can connect to hardware wallets such as Ledger and Trezor. Your signing method remains important even when the balances are displayed together in the browser.

Send and inspect the result

In the portfolio interface, Send opens the transfer form. Review the destination, selected network, asset, amount and estimated fee, then approve through the connected wallet. The transaction hash lets you follow the resulting transaction in an explorer.

For users who need a transaction to carry data, the official guide documents Advanced > Add Data. Data must be in the expected hexadecimal form; even a zero-ETH transaction can require a network fee. Information included in a public-chain transaction is public, so this field is unsuitable for passwords or private messages.

Free interface, separate transaction costs

MEW describes its client-side interface as free and publishes the web code under the MIT license. That does not remove blockchain fees or the charges of integrated buying, swapping and staking providers.

The service terms say you retain control of your keys and do not transfer assets into MEW custody. They also explain that MEW cannot retrieve lost credentials. Keep the backup appropriate to the wallet you connect; a portfolio display is not a replacement for that recovery material.

Strengths

  • The web portfolio works with several supported signing methods, including hardware wallets.
  • The interface supports detailed transaction inspection and optional data fields.

Watch out for

  • MEW cannot restore lost wallet credentials for the user.
  • Network fees and integrated-provider charges are separate from free interface access.

Best for

  • Ethereum users who want a browser view of a supported wallet
  • People using a hardware or mobile wallet to approve Ethereum transactions
