What it does

Nagios XI is commercial infrastructure-monitoring software installed on a Linux server that the operator owns. It runs plugins against hosts and services on configured intervals, compares results with Warning and Critical thresholds, records the state, and notifies assigned contacts. Its web interface adds Configuration Wizards, a database, dashboards, reports, discovery, and a REST API on top of the Nagios Core monitoring engine. Checks can use agents on servers or agentless methods such as SNMP for network devices.

Start with one host and a check method

Nagios XI is self-hosted rather than a managed monitoring service. Install it on a Linux server, add a host, and choose a check route that fits the target: the product documents agents for servers and agentless SNMP checks for network equipment. Plugins run at the interval you set; their results are compared with Warning and Critical ranges, saved, and sent to assigned contacts. Configuration Wizards, dashboards, reports, and the REST API provide a management layer over the Nagios Core engine.

Illustrative example, not hands-on tested: an operator could add one Linux server, configure CPU and disk checks with warning and critical ranges, then route state changes to a team contact. A switch could instead use an SNMP check. Nagios reports the check state and can run configured actions; it is not a substitute for application traces or centralized log analysis.

The product page lists a limited free license, capped at 7 nodes or 100 services, whichever is reached first; that free license is self-supported. Paid licenses are perpetual and node-based, with unlimited services on licensed nodes. The first year includes Maintenance & Support; renewal is needed to continue receiving its updates and support.

Keep the Core and XI licenses distinct

Nagios XI is commercial software built on Nagios Core, which Nagios describes separately as its open-source monitoring engine. XI adds a web interface and management features, so its license and support terms should not be inferred from the Core project.

Strengths

  • Supports agent-based checks for servers and agentless SNMP monitoring for network devices.
  • Compares plugin results with configurable Warning and Critical ranges, records check states, and notifies assigned contacts.
  • Adds a web interface, Configuration Wizards, dashboards, reporting, discovery, and a REST API to the Core monitoring engine.

Watch out for

  • The operator must provide and maintain a Linux server; this is not a vendor-hosted monitoring service.
  • The free license is self-supported and capped at 7 nodes or 100 services, whichever limit is reached first.

Best for

  • IT teams that need self-hosted checks across servers, network equipment, applications, and services.
  • Administrators who want node-based licensing, configurable thresholds, and an API alongside a web console.
