What it does

The Dutch National Archives brings together photographs from Anefo, Spaarnestad, Willem van de Poll and other collections. Selected records offer free high-resolution images marked Public Domain or CC0.

Use Doorzoek de gratis foto’s on the photographs page to reach the free selection. A reusable record has both a download button and a Public Domain or CC0 mark. The archive’s scan guide describes photo downloads as JPEGs prepared at 300 dpi for A4 printing.

The image viewer includes zoom, rotation, mirroring and brightness, contrast and gamma controls. Those viewing adjustments can help examine an indistinct historical detail.

The open subset can be reused in commercial publications, but the waiver does not cover every catalogue photograph. Images with third-party or unknown copyright may be viewable without a download option. People, trademarks and artworks depicted in a photograph can introduce additional rights. The archive appreciates a credit naming the photographer, National Archives and collection, even where attribution is not compulsory.

Strengths

  • Public Domain and CC0 markings identify the open image subset.
  • Viewer controls include rotation, mirroring and tonal adjustments.

Watch out for

  • A photograph may be visible online without being available for download.

Best for

  • Editors seeking Dutch historical photographs
  • Researchers examining press and documentary photography
