What it does
Nationalmuseum’s image resource connects its collection database, media portal and public-domain images on Wikimedia Commons. It covers artwork photography alongside material documenting the museum’s history and collections.
Choose the route that matches your task. The collection database is useful for identifying and zooming into an artwork, but it does not provide high-resolution downloads. The media portal supplies downloadable public material, while the museum’s Wikimedia collection offers free high-resolution images of popular paintings and drawings.
Look for the rights label. PD images are public domain; CC BY-SA photographs require credit, a licence link and the same licence for adaptations. Images marked with artist or Bildupphovsrätt copyright need permission from the Visual Copyright Society.
If the available files do not meet your needs, email Image Services with the inventory number, title and artist. Nationalmuseum recommends checking its free Wikimedia images first.
Strengths
- Separate research and download routes help locate both object details and files.
- The rights guide explains PD, CC BY-SA and artist-copyright labels.
Watch out for
- Zoomable collection images are not themselves high-resolution downloads.
- Some images require permission from an external copyright holder.
Best for
- Publishers sourcing Nationalmuseum artwork images
- Designers seeking Swedish museum paintings and drawings
