What it does

Nationwide offers UK current accounts and savings with app, internet, telephone and branch access. Its app provides debit-card details, PIN viewing and temporary freezing. The Scam Checker service gives current-account customers a way to discuss a concerning payment before sending it.

Nationwide’s Scam Checker is a conversation with the building society before making a payment. Call 0800 030 40 57, available around the clock, or visit a branch to discuss the circumstances. Its associated protection promise covers Faster Payments, CHAPS and electronic transfers between Nationwide accounts when the service has been consulted first and has not advised against paying. Card payments, cash withdrawals, cheques and overseas SWIFT or SEPA transfers are outside that promise.

The app also handles everyday card administration: viewing debit-card details and a PIN, or temporarily freezing a missing card. Internet banking provides balances and payment access.

A current-account option

FlexDirect has no monthly account-maintenance fee. Charges can apply to overseas card use and some transfers, while an approved overdraft carries interest beyond the first £50. Its introductory cashback and interest have separate funding and activity conditions.

To apply, be a UK resident aged 18 or over and use the account personally. Prepare three years of address history. A UK passport or driving licence can speed up identity checks; applicants without one may need to visit a branch. The application rules also limit the number of existing Nationwide sole or joint current accounts.

App or text alerts warn about overdrafts and failed scheduled payments. Extra alerts can track a chosen balance threshold, helping a household notice when its available funds fall below a planned amount.

Strengths

  • Scam Checker offers a phone or branch conversation before a concerning payment.
  • Optional balance-threshold alerts complement automatic overdraft and payment-failure notices.

Watch out for

  • The Scam Protection Promise excludes card payments, cash, cheques and overseas SWIFT or SEPA transfers.
  • Some applicants need a branch visit to complete identity checks.

Best for

  • UK adults who want digital account access with branch support
  • Current-account customers seeking help before a suspicious transfer
