What it does

NatWest provides mobile and online account administration, including payments, standing orders, notifications and spending views. Its Select current account has no monthly account fee. Round Ups can move spare change from eligible card purchases into linked savings, with an optional multiplier.

NatWest’s Round Ups can turn a £4.20 card purchase into an 80p savings transfer. A three-times multiplier would put £2.40 aside instead. These are transfers of the customer’s own money from a current account to a chosen eligible instant-access savings account.

Open the current account in the app, tap the three-dot menu, then select Round Ups. Choose the savings arrangement and multiplier. The feature applies to sterling debit-card and contactless payments, including pending payments when it is switched on. Amounts for purchases clearing on the same day are grouped into one transfer, which can take up to four days.

The app will skip a round-up that would take the account into overdraft. On a joint account, the setting follows each person’s debit card, so both holders must enable it if both sets of purchases should contribute. My Round Ups shows monthly and yearly totals; switching the feature off and on resets the displayed yearly total.

The Select account

Select has no monthly account fee. An optional overdraft carries interest, with a representative variable rate of 39.49% EAR; it requires separate approval. Applicants must be UK residents aged at least 18. Online opening can require photo ID matched to a selfie and additional proof of address.

Alongside saving, the app offers favourite payees and views of linked accounts from other banks. Standing-order management, payment notifications and spending views help handle recurring commitments.

Strengths

  • Round Ups offers multipliers and avoids transfers that would create an overdraft.
  • Monthly and yearly totals show how much the feature has moved into savings.

Watch out for

  • Round Ups needs eligible linked accounts and only applies to sterling card payments.
  • Turning Round Ups off and back on resets the displayed yearly total.

Best for

  • UK adults who want a current account without a monthly fee
  • NatWest cardholders making small automatic contributions to linked savings
