What it does
Neir offers free and paid email accounts, aliases, standard mail protocols and a desktop app. It documents OpenPGP encryption of the webmail copy while retaining a standard copy for IMAP and POP3.
Neir distinguishes an encrypted webmail copy from the standard message available through IMAP or POP3. Incoming internet mail still arrives through SMTP, so reading through different clients does not have an identical storage-encryption workflow.
The service offers account-key login, aliases and an optional desktop app, with a small free mailbox and additional Pro storage/controls. Its 12-word recovery phrase restores the account and address with a new Account Key, but Neir says messages encrypted under the lost key cannot then be decrypted. Recovering account access therefore does not recover that old encrypted archive.
Strengths
- Standard clients and an encrypted webmail workflow are both documented.
- Aliases and an optional desktop app are offered.
Watch out for
- A standard copy remains available for IMAP and POP3.
- The free mailbox has a small storage allowance.
Best for
- People who will compare webmail encryption with standard-client access carefully
