What it does
Neo4j AuraDB is Neo4j's fully managed cloud graph database for storing and querying connected data. A new instance is configured in the Aura console, where the user selects an AuraDB tier and graph-analytics option. Neo4j's documentation then shows how to connect in console tools such as Query or from an application using a driver and the instance URI and credentials. It is suited to data where relationships are central to the application's queries, rather than a general-purpose relational service.
Start with an instance and its credentials
In the documented Aura workflow, create an AuraDB instance from the console, select a tier, and choose how graph analytics should run. Neo4j generates the instance password at creation time; the guide says to copy or download it then because it cannot be recovered later. A Free instance is limited to one per account, and creating additional instances requires a tier upgrade.
For a first application exercise, model a small set of entities as nodes and their connections as relationships, then use the Query tool in the console to explore the resulting graph. To connect an application instead, use the instance's connection URI with a Neo4j driver and the username and password. The connection guide lists drivers for several languages and also documents the Query API and Cypher Shell as alternative clients. These are documented workflows, not steps performed for this listing.
AuraDB is a managed graph-database service, not the self-managed Neo4j Graph Database product. The pricing page distinguishes a Free plan from paid AuraDB tiers, so the overall service is best treated as freemium. Check the current plan details and deployment configuration before estimating spend; no plan price is quoted here.
Strengths
- The console workflow creates a managed instance and lets users choose its tier and graph-analytics arrangement.
- Applications can connect through Neo4j drivers, while the console also offers database tools such as Query.
- A free tier is available for learning and small projects.
Watch out for
- Only one Free instance can be created per account; additional instances require a tier upgrade.
- The instance password is generated at creation and is not recoverable afterward, so it must be saved at that point.
Best for
- Applications whose core queries follow relationships across connected entities
- Teams that want Neo4j graph storage without operating the database server themselves
