What it does
Neon provides managed PostgreSQL with separate storage and compute, database branches, autoscaling and scale-to-zero behavior. A project supplies a PostgreSQL connection string for a chosen branch, database and role. Applications can connect with standard drivers or the Neon serverless driver. The service reduces server administration, while developers still choose a connection mode and protect credentials in their application environment.
A useful first task is connecting an existing application to a new Neon project. In the Console, choose the project and branch, then use Connect to select a database and role. Neon constructs a PostgreSQL connection string. The docs show both direct and pooled strings; the pooled form is the better starting point for applications that create many concurrent connections. Put the value in an environment variable such as DATABASE_URL, not in source code.
The service remains PostgreSQL, so an ordinary PostgreSQL client or framework can use it. The documented serverless driver is another option for Node.js, Next.js, serverless and edge runtimes. Branches make isolated development or test databases practical without asking each developer to administer a separate database server.
Neon's pricing page currently lists a free tier without a time limit or credit card and usage-based paid options. The free allowance is bounded, so estimate storage and compute before relying on it for a production workload. The documentation also presents the product under the Lakebase Postgres name; confirm product naming and the current plan terms when integrating this entry.
Strengths
- Applications can connect through standard PostgreSQL connection strings and drivers.
- Pooled and direct connection strings support different application connection patterns.
- Branches provide isolated database copies for development and testing.
Watch out for
- The application still must store and rotate database credentials safely.
- Compute and storage allowances vary by plan and usage.
Best for
- Adding managed PostgreSQL to a serverless or web application
- Creating isolated database branches for previews and integration tests
