What it does
net-tools is the Linux collection containing utilities such as ifconfig, route, arp and netstat.
The command determines the question: ifconfig describes interfaces, route handles routing tables, and netstat reports sockets or interface/protocol statistics. In netstat, select listening sockets explicitly or include all sockets; numeric output avoids translating addresses and ports into names. Its process column can identify socket owners, but viewing that information for other users’ sockets needs superuser privileges. This is local kernel information, not a scan of every device on the network. Debian’s packaged manual calls netstat mostly obsolete and points to ss and ip replacements. Match procedures to the installed distribution, since the project also notes differing hostname implementations.
