What it does

NetworkMiner analyzes PCAP traffic into host information and extracted artifacts, with free and Professional editions.

Open a PCAP when the goal is a host inventory or extracted artifacts rather than a packet-by-packet view. NetworkMiner aggregates addresses into hosts and can extract supported files, messages, certificates and credentials, with string or byte-pattern searches. These artifacts can contain sensitive information, so treat the capture and extracted directory as investigation data. Live capture is another input route. The edition comparison matters: PCAPNG parsing and CSV/Excel/XML/CASE/JSON-LD report export are Professional features, and command-line scripting requires a Corporate license. The application is designed primarily for Windows and also has a Linux route. Its results cover the traffic present and protocols it can decode, not every activity on the network.

Strengths

  • Passive host inventory and artifact extraction
