What it does
Next.js is a React framework that adds an application router, server and client rendering options, and production build tooling. The App Router uses the file system to define routes and works with React Server Components and related server features. It is useful for full-stack websites and applications where the team wants conventions for pages, layouts, and development builds rather than wiring every layer separately.
Let the route structure shape the first page
With the App Router, files under app/ define pages and layouts. Start at app/page.tsx, then decide which parts of an interface need browser-side interaction. React Server Components are the default, so stateful controls need a client boundary. Understanding that server/client split early helps teams place interactive code deliberately instead of moving it later.
The project initializer offers defaults for TypeScript, ESLint, the App Router, and a development bundler. The official guide then uses the development script for a local preview and documents production build and start commands separately.
Next.js is an MIT-licensed framework maintained by Vercel. It adds routing and application conventions on top of React, but it is not the React library or Vercel's hosting platform.
Strengths
- The current setup guide creates a project with a file-system App Router and recommended defaults.
- Layouts and page files provide a structured way to organize routes.
- The framework documents separate development and production build/start workflows.
Watch out for
- The App Router's server/client component model adds concepts that teams should understand before organizing interactive code.
- A framework project still needs a chosen deployment target and environment configuration.
Best for
- React websites that need an application router and server-rendering capabilities.
- Teams that want conventions for layouts, pages, and production builds.
- Projects comfortable with React Server Components and a framework-managed build workflow.
