What it does
NIST’s Image Gallery documents scientific instruments, laboratory work, researchers and measurement standards. Keyword search includes titles, captions, image credits, alternative text, tags and reference numbers, with a separate topic selector.
The gallery can answer a specific equipment brief: its subjects include ion traps, antenna robots, optical clocks and kilogram masses. Open an image record for the caption, credit and image type, then use Download full image. For example, Kilograms at NIST identifies the platinum-iridium K92 mass in front of stainless-steel masses and credits J. L. Lee/NIST.
NIST permits copying and distribution of its public information except material marked as copyrighted. It requests the appropriate image credit, so keep the photographer’s name where the record supplies one.
Strengths
- Caption and reference-number searching helps locate precise technical subjects.
- Individual records connect the full image with its caption and credit.
Watch out for
- Separately marked copyrighted material is outside NIST’s general copying permission.
Best for
- Science communicators illustrating equipment and measurement research
