What it does
The National Library of Ireland’s photographic collections cover early photography, town and landscape views, studio portraits and documentary work. Many images are digitised in its online catalogue; physical archive visits require a reader’s ticket and an appointment.
The Lawrence collection is a useful starting point for Irish towns and landscapes from the 1870s to 1914. The Poole collection concentrates on Waterford portraits and local life between 1884 and 1954. These named collections help narrow a historical picture search before choosing individual photographs.
For a high-resolution file, use the Copy Enquiry Form and include the catalogue call number. An existing digital image costs EUR 10 per image as a one-time supply charge; a photograph that needs digitising costs EUR 25. The Library emails a download link and normally dispatches orders within ten working days of payment.
Publication permission is a separate step and may carry an additional fee. Apply with the image references, intended use, audience and production details before ordering publication copies. Noncommercial and academic publications with a print run below 1,000 can qualify for a reproduction-fee waiver, but copying charges still apply. Material alterations require written consent, and any outside copyright permissions remain the applicant’s responsibility.
