What it does

The National Library of Scotland provides digitised photographs, maps, posters and films through specialist catalogues. It also supplies requested copies as digital files, subject to the item’s condition and rights.

Choose the catalogue by format. Digital Gallery gathers digitised material, the map-image site offers zoom, comparison and annotation, and the Moving Image Archive covers Scottish films from commercial releases to home movies.

For a supplied image, send a copy enquiry and put any format requirements in Additional information. The library checks the item and emails an order page; approve it through Checkout and pay. Digital files arrive by an emailed download link. JPEGs are supplied at a minimum 400 ppi in Adobe RGB, with TIFF copies also available. Digital orders have a minimum charge of GBP 14 excluding VAT, or GBP 16.80 including VAT.

Copying charges do not include any reuse permission fee. Most digitised works are out of copyright, but use the attached rights statement: maps, moving images and some other material have separate conditions. The library cannot clear another copyright owner’s permission for you.

Strengths

  • Specialist catalogues distinguish maps, photographs and moving images.
  • Copy orders specify JPEG or TIFF delivery and published reproduction charges.

Watch out for

  • Copying fees and reuse permission fees are separate.
  • Fragile items may not be available for copying.

Best for

  • Researchers and publishers illustrating Scottish history and places
