What it does
New Old Stock curates historical photographs from public archives, including industrial scenes, architecture and space history. Its free feed links to original Flickr records; paid packs provide edited selections as ZIP files of JPEGs.
Click a photograph’s linked title to reach its archive record. That is where you can check the caption, photographer and current licence. The Regina chocolate-factory image from Lisbon, for example, links to a record under CC BY-NC-ND 2.0, which requires credit and prohibits commercial use and distribution of adaptations. The feed’s broad rights label should not replace that check.
Photo Packs offers a quicker route for an edited set. The store lists Modern Tech Support for USD $5, Constructive Geometries for USD $10 and Americana for USD $15 as one-time pack purchases. Packs have a minimum width of 1,000 pixels, with most over 1,280 pixels. The curator says pack sources are selected for commercial permission; individual free-feed images can have narrower terms.
Strengths
- Original archive links retain the historical context behind each selection.
- Edited JPEG packs reduce the work of assembling a matching vintage set.
Watch out for
- Linked photographs can prohibit commercial use or distributed edits.
- Pack images may be too small for large print layouts.
Best for
- Designers finding vintage images for websites
- Editors researching archival photography and its original captions
