What it does

Notesnook is a note taking app that encrypts notes before they leave your device. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and the web, and the client and sync server are open source under GPLv3. The free plan gives unlimited notes on unlimited devices with 50MB of storage per month.

Notesnook keeps your notes encrypted before they leave your device, so what travels between your devices is unreadable to anyone else. The client and the sync server are open source under GPLv3, which means the encryption claims can be checked rather than trusted. You can start a note on a laptop and finish it on a phone, and the same notes appear seconds apart. The editor handles tables, checklists, code, maths, outlines and attachments, which is enough for a thesis chapter or a quick shopping list. An app lock opens Notesnook with a fingerprint, PIN or password, and a separate vault password adds a second lock for your most private notes. You can publish a single note as its own web page, behind a password if you want, while the rest of your account stays private. A web clipper saves the words and pictures from a page without the popups and trackers. Reminders fire on every device you own, and notifications come from your device rather than Notesnook's servers. An inbox API lets Zapier, IFTTT or your own script drop notes into your account, each encrypted before it reaches the servers. The free plan covers unlimited notes on unlimited devices with 50MB of storage per month and a 10MB file size limit. Paid plans add storage and features, and you can cancel any time while keeping your notes readable, editable and exportable on the free plan. If you want to run your own sync server, self hosting is listed as in progress on the public roadmap.
