What it does
NPTEL publishes self-study courses through an online-learning initiative involving Indian Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science.
Use NPTEL when you want the course material associated with the IIT and IISc teaching initiative. The homepage distinguishes self-study material from semester timelines and exam registration. Begin by finding a subject and inspecting its prerequisites; only investigate the scheduled assessment route if you need it. This keeps independent study separate from the conditions attached to an examination.
Enrollment and study are free. Scheduled courses combine videos, weekly assignments and a discussion forum; certification adds an optional paid proctored exam. Some international exam cities are offered, so check current arrangements rather than assuming you can sit it from home. Assignment and exam pass requirements vary by course.
Watch out for
- Certification requires a separate paid proctored exam and course-specific pass criteria
