What it does
GNU Octave is a scientific programming environment with matrix operations, numerical computation and two- and three-dimensional plotting.
GNU Octave expresses numerical problems as matrices and reusable code, with GUI, console and script execution. The homepage solves Ax=b using the backslash operator and plots sampled vectors in 2D, alongside 3D plotting support. Its linked version 11.1 file-I/O manual shows save/load for selected variables or the current scope. Choose the format explicitly: the default is Octave text, and a .mat filename alone does not select a MATLAB format. Append avoids the normal overwrite behavior. ASCII matrix export is restricted to 2D, writes only real components and defaults to single precision unless double is selected. HDF5 requires build support, and that manual says MATLAB v7.3 saving is unimplemented. MATLAB syntax compatibility therefore needs to be checked alongside file formats and package dependencies. GPL distributions cover Windows, Mac and Linux.
