What it does

Offen Fair Web Analytics provides website usage reports alongside a visitor view of collected data. Its opt-in design lets visitors review, delete or stop participation, while operators run the analytics installation themselves.

Offen makes participation part of website measurement. Visitors must opt in before collection, and can later inspect their own usage data, delete it or stop participating. The operator's report therefore describes participating visitors rather than an assumed count of everyone who arrived.

The service is free to self-host, with original source code under Apache 2.0. A single installation can cover several websites and shared team access. The operator is responsible for deployment and maintenance, whether using the binary distribution or a Docker image.

For the documented Ubuntu setup, configure the service and its secure domain, then visit the instance's /setup page to create the first login user and website account. Email configuration supports invitations and password resets. Add the tracking snippet to the pages being measured and explain the visitor data view to the audience.

Reports can be filtered by URL, location, referrer, campaign parameters, and landing or exit pages. For a community site's newsletter campaign, that lets the operator inspect the relevant arrivals without treating non-participating visitors as measured users. Collected user data is deleted after six months, so longer historical comparisons need to account for that retention boundary.

Strengths

  • Visitors can review and delete their collected data.
  • One installation supports several sites and shared team access.

Watch out for

  • Collection requires visitor opt-in, and the published user-data retention period is six months.

Best for

  • Site operators who want a visitor-accessible, opt-in analytics model
