What it does

Onsen UI is an open-source mobile-interface framework based on Web Components. It includes iOS-style and Material-style controls, with optional platform styling and framework bindings.

Onsen UI supplies mobile controls in both flat iOS and Material Android styles. Its Web Components add interaction to the visual CSS components, including details such as dragging and ripple effects. Automatic platform styling is optional, so the same interface code can use the appropriate platform appearance.

Install onsenui with npm for the framework-independent core, or use the documented React, Vue or Angular binding package alongside it. Released files are also available through a distribution repository and public CDNs. The component overview shows the CSS layer; use the custom elements when the control needs JavaScript behavior.

The framework is free under Apache 2.0 and public package use needs no account. The project links separate Cordova and progressive web app guides for taking an interface into a complete application. Monaca is a related development toolkit with cloud and device tools, rather than a required purchase for using Onsen’s components.

Strengths

  • Platform styles and Web Component behavior are documented separately.
  • The core can be adopted directly or through framework bindings.

Best for

  • Teams prototyping hybrid and progressive web application interfaces
