What it does
OONI Probe tests Internet censorship and connection behavior through mobile, desktop and command-line applications.
Choose the test and websites that match the question, then review the publication settings before running it. OONI Probe measures website, messaging-app and circumvention-tool behavior on the tested connection. Measurements sent to OONI become public by default, including network, country and timing context; the apps allow opting out of sending measurements. The policy generally preserves the public archive, with deletion exceptions for user safety. Performance tests use M-Lab, which collects and publishes the test IP regardless of OONI settings. Tested services and network observers can see measurement traffic. Use OONI’s test descriptions and risk guide to decide which measurements fit the situation.
Strengths
- Several censorship and performance test types
Watch out for
- Measurements sent to OONI are public by default; M-Lab performance tests have separate IP-publication terms
