What it does
Open Babel is a chemical-data toolbox with ready-to-use programs and a programmer toolkit. It reads, writes, converts, searches, and analyzes many chemical file formats.
The local obabel command reads molecular-data files and writes a named output, with explicit format IDs when extensions are ambiguous. Reader/writer options and SMARTS filters can narrow or modify a collection. Several inputs can be combined, or the multiple-output option can split molecules and batch files. SMILES-to-SDF conversion does not generate coordinates automatically; request 2D or 3D generation when the receiving modeling workflow needs them.
Strengths
- Combines chemical-format conversion with molecular filtering and search.
Best for
- Moving chemical structure data between scientific applications
