What it does

OpenRouter provides one API endpoint for many AI models. Users sign up, buy credits and create an API key to send chat completion requests. The API is OpenAI compatible, and client and agent SDKs are available. OpenRouter routes requests across providers and falls back to another provider when one goes down. Documentation covers models, routing, features and integrations.

The quickstart shows requests to /api/v1/chat/completions and use of the OpenAI SDK as a drop-in replacement by changing the base URL. Client SDKs and an agent SDK are documented for typed calls and multi-turn tool use. OpenRouter tracks provider response times, error rates and availability to route requests, and provider selection can be customized. EU in-region routing is offered on Business and Enterprise plans. A hosted MCP server lets coding assistants read live model, pricing and usage data. The site also lists model browsing, rankings, benchmarks, apps and a pricing page.
