What it does

The OpenTelemetry Collector is a configurable telemetry pipeline. Receivers accept data, processors transform or filter it, and exporters send it to one or more backends; configuration enables the selected components in named pipelines. It can run as an agent near workloads or as a gateway for shared routing and processing.

The official quick start demonstrates a local Collector container and a telemetry generator that sends traces to it. Use the example to understand the receiver-to-processor-to-exporter flow, then adapt the configuration to the backends and signals your services actually use. A single Collector can forward to more than one backend, which is useful when separating storage from the collection agents deployed beside applications.

The quick start explicitly says the demo is not production-ready. The Collector does not provide the storage or query interface of a backend; teams must choose compatible components, configure pipelines, and operate the destination system. That separation is helpful for portability, but it also means a Collector configuration is only useful when its receiver, processor, and exporter choices match the surrounding systems.

Strengths

  • A single pipeline can receive, process, and export telemetry to multiple backends.
  • The quick start provides a local Docker-based trace example.
  • The core Collector is Apache-2.0 licensed.

Watch out for

  • The quick-start setup is a demonstration rather than a production deployment.
  • The Collector does not replace a telemetry backend or its query interface.
  • Pipeline components must be selected and configured for the data path.

Best for

  • Routing OpenTelemetry data between applications and observability backends
  • Adding a gateway or agent layer for telemetry processing and export
