What it does
Origami Studio is a free Mac tool for building interactive interfaces. It combines a layout canvas with visual patches that control behaviour, animation and device inputs. Editable Figma layers can be imported, and prototypes can be recorded as video or viewed with the separate Origami Live app on iOS.
Connect a visual layer to an interaction
The Canvas holds shapes, text and imported artwork. The Patch Editor adds behaviour through connected blocks, and the Inspector exposes a selected layer's properties. In the Layer List, hover over a layer and use Touch to add an interaction such as Tap, Scroll or Swipe. The Viewer lets you interact with the result and record it.
Patches can work with a device's motion, location, photo library, audio and haptic feedback. For example, a live audio input can drive a visual response instead of playing a fixed animation.
Showing the prototype to someone else
For an iPhone or iPad preview, install Origami Live and connect the device to the Mac by USB with a prototype open. Saved prototypes can later run untethered. Someone receiving an Origami project needs Studio or Live installed; a recorded video is easier to distribute when they only need to watch.
The editor is free, but it is a Mac application. It is intended for interaction prototypes, not publishing a finished application.
Strengths
- The Patch Editor connects device inputs with visual layer properties
- Figma imports preserve editable shapes and text
- The Viewer can record a prototype as video
Watch out for
- Authoring requires a Mac
- Recipients need Studio or Origami Live to interact with project files
Best for
- Interaction designers exploring device-aware prototypes
