What it does
SmokePing measures latency, variation and packet loss, storing history and drawing graphs with RRDtool.
Configure a target tree and the probe appropriate to each question. The examples distinguish ICMP latency from DNS and HTTP service probes, with separate sample counts and intervals. SmokePing stores history through RRDtool and draws latency distributions, helping reveal variation hidden by an average. Multiple measurement sources can compare the same destination from different locations. A Unix/Perl setup needs RRDtool and the programs used by its chosen probes; the web frontend needs a CGI-capable server. The installation page contains historical version examples, so use package-specific requirements. Each graph describes its configured source, target and probe rather than overall Internet health.
