What it does
Paletton is a browser colour-scheme designer built around a traditional red-yellow-blue wheel. Combine one to four hues with five shades each, then preview the result in layouts, pictures or tartan patterns. Exports include CSS, PNG and palette files for Photoshop and GIMP.
Select a monochromatic, triad, tetrad or free-style scheme, then move the main hue on the wheel. Brightness and saturation presets change the palette together. Hover over a swatch for its code or select it for RGB, luminosity and other colour values.
The color contrast table compares pairs against WCAG contrast requirements. Separate simulations cover colour-vision differences, grayscale and display gamma.
Output choices include HTML, CSS, LESS, XML, text and PNG, plus Photoshop ACO and GIMP GPL palette files. The site requires JavaScript and is supported by advertising. Its traditional RYB wheel describes artistic colour relationships, so it is useful for exploring harmonies before taking the resulting numeric values into another application.
Strengths
- Exports include Photoshop ACO and GIMP palette files.
- Preview contexts include website layouts and tartan patterns.
Watch out for
- The application requires JavaScript.
- Its harmony wheel uses RYB rather than RGB relationships.
Best for
- Designers comparing harmony models and palette variants
- Students exploring relationships between hues and shades
