What it does
Pantheon combines website hosting with deployment workflow and portfolio management for supported web stacks. Its platform provides development, test, and live environments, while site creation and migration guides cover WordPress and Drupal. For connected external repositories, Pantheon documents support for GitHub and GitLab and can create a Multidev environment for a pull or merge request. The service is aimed at teams managing websites rather than people looking for a general-purpose VPS or unrestricted container host.
Treat a site as a staged project
The onboarding path begins in a workspace. In the Add a Site guide, a new CMS site starts in Dev: choose WordPress or Drupal, choose Pantheon or an external GitHub or GitLab repository for the codebase, and let the platform create the site. Install the CMS in Dev, then create Test and Live environments when the project is ready. Pantheon also documents a migration path for existing CMS sites, with separate instructions for larger archives and some Drupal or WordPress cases.
With an external repository, the documented integration creates a Multidev environment for each pull or merge request; merging to the main branch deploys code to Pantheon's Dev environment. That is useful when a team wants its review workflow to stay connected to source control, but it does not mean a change is automatically pushed to production.
Sandbox is not the production plan
Pantheon's pricing page lists a free Silver workspace with sandbox sites. It also says a site plan is needed before connecting a domain or going live. Paid plan selection depends on workspace features and site traffic, so calculate both rather than comparing only the workspace fee. The platform is specialized for supported website stacks and includes hosting operations; it is not an unmanaged shell for arbitrary server software. No site was created or migrated for this listing.
Strengths
- Separates development, test, and live environments for a website project.
- Documents GitHub and GitLab integrations with Multidev environments for pull or merge requests.
- Includes website operations such as backups, logs, caching, and a command-line interface in its plan comparison.
Watch out for
- The free workspace is for sandbox sites; a site plan is needed before a site can go live with a connected domain.
- Pantheon does not provide general shell access over SSH; SSH keys authenticate site operations such as Git, SFTP, WP-CLI, or Drush instead.
Best for
- Teams creating or migrating WordPress and Drupal websites with separate development, test, and live environments.
- Web teams that want pull-request review environments connected to an existing GitHub or GitLab repository.
