What it does
pass is a Unix-oriented password manager that keeps each password in a GPG-encrypted file and can track the store with Git.
Each pass entry is an ordinary encrypted file, and its directory path identifies the account. A hierarchy such as work/email and personal/bank can therefore be managed with familiar file tools. The documented commands add, generate, retrieve or briefly copy a password to the clipboard. This model fits someone comfortable managing GPG keys and a filesystem. Decide how those keys and the password directory will be backed up before configuring Git synchronization. The file-based design gives flexibility, but it also leaves the storage and key-recovery arrangement to the user.
Strengths
- Ordinary file hierarchy for password records
- Optional Git history and syncing
Best for
- Unix users comfortable with GPG and shell tools
