What it does

PatternFly is Red Hat’s open-source design system for enterprise applications. It combines React and HTML/CSS components, charts, interface patterns and content guidance. Public guides cover installation and upgrades, and the core HTML/CSS library is free under the MIT licence.

Tables, toolbars, filters and bulk selection are recurring parts of an administration screen. PatternFly connects those controls with larger patterns such as data views, primary-detail layouts and dashboards. Its catalogue also covers wizards, empty states, notifications and log viewers.

Start developing offers two implementation routes. For React, install @patternfly/react-core and import its base stylesheet. The HTML/CSS route uses @patternfly/patternfly, with a full stylesheet or separate component files. Utility classes are in the additional patternfly-addons.css file, so they are not included simply by loading the main stylesheet.

The core library's MIT licence permits use and modification with its notices retained. PatternFly supports the latest two major versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge. Match package versions through the release highlights; beta features can receive breaking changes outside the normal major-release cycle.

Strengths

  • Enterprise controls connect to data-view and workflow patterns
  • React and HTML/CSS implementations have separate setup guides
  • Content guidance covers error messages, labels and tooltips

Watch out for

  • Utility styles require an additional stylesheet in the HTML/CSS route
  • Beta components can change outside major releases

Best for

  • Designers and developers building administration and enterprise products
