What it does

Petra is a free Aptos wallet with iOS, Android, extension and web access. It combines portfolio and activity views, swaps and Ledger connections, with different recovery arrangements for local wallets and social-login accounts.

Petra's account choice determines how you regain access later. The extension can create a local wallet with a password and secret recovery phrase, without registering a hosted account. Petra Web instead offers Keyless accounts through social login.

A Keyless account can add a phrase backup through Account Backup, Recovery Phrase and Reveal. Petra displays the new backup once, so preserve it before continuing. Confirming it changes the account's signing keys on Aptos and requires APT for the network charge; this operation is not sponsored. Keep social access available until the rotation succeeds.

The resulting phrase can restore the account in Petra's mobile app or extension. Compare the restored address with Petra Web before relying on it. If you replace the backup in Petra Web, only the newest phrase remains valid. The procedure supplements social login rather than disabling it.

Petra Web accounts are also tied to the application's domain. Using the same Google login in another Aptos application need not produce the same wallet address. This matters when choosing where someone should send a payment.

Once an account is set up, Petra groups holdings across Aptos protocols and provides an Activity view for following transactions. Its built-in perpetual trading uses Decibel and has separate trading requirements; wallet creation alone does not establish eligibility for that market.

The extension and web wallet are free to use. Aptos network charges and connected-service charges still apply, and Keyless transactions can cost more than private-key transactions because verification differs. Token prices can fall, and recovery options do not reverse an authorized transfer.

Strengths

  • The Android app previews and simulates transactions before signing
  • Multiple mobile accounts can be stored and switched within the app
  • Ledger connections provide an alternative to software-held signing keys

Watch out for

  • A replaced Keyless backup phrase no longer restores control of that account
  • The same social login can lead to different Aptos addresses in different applications

Best for

  • Aptos users choosing between local recovery and a social-login backup
  • People tracking holdings across more than one Aptos protocol
