What it does

phpList manages permission-based newsletters, subscriber lists and campaigns. The self-hosted phpList 3 application is available free of charge under AGPLv3; phpList.com also offers a hosted service with its own sending and subscriber-based billing options.

List cleanup and unsubscribe handling are different tasks in phpList. A subscriber has one profile and can belong to several lists, so deleting a list removes that grouping without deleting the subscriber. For an organisation publishing both event notices and a monthly bulletin, those memberships can share an address and profile rather than becoming separate copies of the same person.

An unsubscribe keeps the address on a do-not-send blacklist. That record helps prevent a later import from simply making the address mailable again. A subscriber profile shows list memberships, confirmation and blacklist status, and campaign history. Removing a membership affects that list; blacklisting prevents further sending to the address.

The free downloadable application requires your own hosting and administration. Its dashboard requires a username and password supplied during setup or by your administrator. phpList.com offers a separate hosted service, with subscriber-based or message-based billing and a small continuing free account.

Strengths

  • A single subscriber profile can belong to multiple lists
  • Unsubscribed addresses remain on a do-not-send blacklist

Watch out for

  • Deleting a list does not delete its subscriber profiles
  • Free self-hosted access does not include operating the hosted service

Best for

  • Newsletter publishers managing overlapping, permission-based mailing lists
