What it does

Memory Icons is Pictogrammers’ pixelated icon library, designed on a 22-by-22 grid. Its repository supplies SVG files, JavaScript path data and routes for Moddable SDK and Playdate projects.

Memory Icons targets small monochrome displays, particularly the Sharp Memory 2.7-inch display. For JavaScript or TypeScript, install @pictogrammers/memory and import a named value such as MemoryAccount to obtain its SVG path data. The separate @pictogrammers/memory-svg package contains SVG files and metadata.

Playdate developers get a more specific route: copy icon.lua into source and the supplied sprite sheet into source/images. Import icon, create an Icon with coordinates and an icon index, and add it to the sprite system. The class can change its symbol with setIcon and move through the inherited sprite methods. The example uses Lua; the C section does not yet provide an implementation.

The two Memory packages are listed under Apache 2.0. A browser pixel editor is available for adapting or contributing artwork, and the project asks contributors to open an issue with the icon’s path data.

Strengths

  • Has a consistent pixel grid and dedicated small-display purpose.
  • Supplies SVG assets, JavaScript path data and a Playdate sprite sheet.

Watch out for

  • The Playdate instructions provide a Lua example but no C implementation.

Best for

  • Small-device interfaces and Playdate projects.
  • Retro interfaces using a deliberate pixel grid.
