What it does
Pixilart combines a browser pixel-art editor with layers, animation frames and a sharing community. Local .pixil projects retain editable drawings, while PNG, GIF and sprite-sheet outputs serve different destinations.
Copy a frame, alter a character’s pose and compare it with onion skin. Alpha Lock confines painting to existing opaque areas. Pixel Perfect drawing requires a one-pixel tool size and cannot be combined with mirror mode.
Keep a local .pixil project before exporting. Download controls can select current or all frames and layers. Persistent Layers keeps the structure consistent across frames, but disabling it cannot be reversed until a new drawing is created.
Free access includes ads. Pro costs US$4.99 per month after a three-day trial and adds ad removal and editable cloud storage. When membership ends, cloud files become read-only for 90 days before deletion, so keep a local copy of ongoing work.
Strengths
- Layer and frame export choices support sprite handoffs.
- Alpha Lock helps recolour opaque artwork without painting outside it.
Watch out for
- Pixel Perfect drawing cannot be combined with mirror mode.
- Pro cloud access becomes read-only after membership ends, then files are deleted after 90 days.
Best for
- Browser pixel-art drawing
- Sprite and GIF preparation
