What it does
Pixquare is a pixel-art editor for iPhone, iPad and Apple Silicon Macs. It combines indexed colour, tilemaps, layered animation and Aseprite file exchange. A one-time licence covers either iPhone alone or all supported Apple devices, with no subscription.
A timeline for sprite work
Layers and frames share one panel, with linked cells, frame tags, onion skins and per-frame timing. Tilemap layers and reusable tilesets help build related game scenery. RGB and indexed modes support either flexible colour selection or a fixed palette.
Pixquare can exchange Aseprite files and export PNG, GIF, MOV, sprite sheets and timelapse recordings. Its interface themes can be edited and shared, including colours, icons and fonts.
Device and licence choices
Choose an all-device licence or an iPhone-only licence. Both include all features and future updates. Downloading the app is free, but the pages do not fully explain what remains usable before purchase.
The manual says Apple Silicon Macs are supported with some operations less optimized. iPhone and iPad are the primary touch platforms; there is no current Android edition.
Strengths
- Linked cells and frame tags organize repeated animation
- Tilemap layers keep scenery work with the sprites
- Editable Aseprite exchange supports another pixel-art editor
Watch out for
- The iPhone-only licence does not cover iPad or Mac
- Some operations are less optimized on Apple Silicon Macs
Best for
- Sprite artists using iPad and iPhone
- Game artists moving pixel files between Apple devices and Aseprite
