What it does

PlanetScale Vitess is a managed MySQL-compatible database offering built on Vitess. Its workflow centers on database branches and deploy requests, so teams can prepare schema changes away from production and review their promotion. The service supports both network-attached storage and PlanetScale Metal deployment choices.

Start by creating a Vitess database and using its main branch for the production schema. Create a development branch for a migration, test the schema change there, then submit a deploy request to promote it. Safe migrations can reject direct DDL on the protected branch and route changes through that review flow. Development branches copy the production schema, not production data, which is useful for testing changes but does not reproduce production records.

The dashboard quickstart asks for a valid payment card, and console access to production branches is disabled by default. Pricing is pay-as-you-go and depends on cluster size, VTGate configuration, shard and replica topology, storage, backups, egress, and add-ons. Teams considering PlanetScale should decide whether that branching model and operational control justify the topology and bill they need.

Strengths

  • Database branches provide a place to prepare schema changes before promotion.
  • Safe migrations can route production schema changes through deploy requests.
  • Pricing is based on configurable cluster resources and topology.

Watch out for

  • Development branches contain the production schema but not production data.
  • The dashboard creation flow requests a credit or debit card.
  • Production branch access in the web console is disabled by default.

Best for

  • Reviewing MySQL schema changes before they reach production
  • Operating a sharded MySQL-compatible workload with managed infrastructure
