What it does
Terragen creates and renders natural environments for landscape artists and visual-effects work. It combines terrain, atmosphere, clouds and imported objects in one scene, with controls for lighting and object distribution. A restricted Free edition is available, while Professional has subscription and perpetual options.
A scene can combine an imported heightfield, which stores ground elevation, with procedural terrain detail. Three-dimensional functions can add cliffs and overhangs. Geographic elevation and aerial-image data can be positioned automatically where supported, or with manually entered latitude and longitude.
Populators distribute copies of imported objects across a planet or another object. Individual copies can be moved, scaled, rotated, recoloured or removed. This supports arrangements such as trees on ground or moss attached to a log without editing the original model each time.
Clouds and fog use volumetric shading, and atmospheric controls include sun position and light scattering. Rendered high-dynamic-range environments can also provide lighting and reflections in another renderer.
Free and paid access
Terragen Free limits still renders to 1,280 × 900 and permits commercial evaluation for 30 days. Professional removes the still-resolution limit. The older Creative edition is no longer sold.
Professional starts at US$10/month, US$96/year or US$199 for a perpetual licence under INDIE 50. That tier is for individual use with total income of at most US$50,000 over the previous 12 months. Other individuals use INDIE 100; company tiers follow revenue and ownership rules.
