What it does

Plasmic is an open-source visual editing and content platform for websites and apps. It connects responsive layouts, interactions and data with existing codebases and reusable React components.

Plasmic lets a team build visually with its existing React components. A developer first sets up an app host and registers the components, making them available inside Plasmic Studio. For ready-made widgets and integrations, press Q to open the insert menu.

There are two main ways to deliver the result. The recommended Headless API route fetches published pages and components into the application. Codegen instead pulls generated React files into the repository with plasmic sync, so updates pass through the team’s code review and deployment process. That route needs developer involvement when changes are shipped.

The hosted Free plan includes three collaborators, unlimited projects and CMS entries, custom domains and deployment to third-party servers. Plasmic-hosted free sites carry a badge, and free version history lasts 14 days. Paid plans remove branding or add collaborators, publishing controls and enterprise options. The hosted editor requires an account.

The repository uses MIT licensing outside its platform directory and AGPL for the platform itself, so the licence depends on which part you reuse.

Strengths

  • Existing React components can become visual building blocks.
  • Headless delivery and generated React files support different release workflows.
  • The free hosted plan allows custom domains and unlimited projects.

Watch out for

  • The Free plan is limited to three collaborators and 14 days of history.
  • Free sites hosted by Plasmic display its badge.
  • Codegen updates require syncing and deploying through a development workflow.

Best for

  • Teams adding visual interface creation to an established React product
  • Design and content teams working with developer-provided components
