What it does
The Claude API gives applications programmatic access to Anthropic's Claude models and related platform features. The Messages API accepts conversation messages and can be used for streaming, tool use, and multimodal inputs; separate endpoints cover tasks such as token counting, model listing, files, and asynchronous batches. Developers can call the REST API directly or use an official SDK, while model selection, usage tiers, token pricing, and feature availability determine the operational tradeoffs.
Start with a single Messages request
The official quickstart requires a Claude Console account and API key. It walks through storing the key in an environment variable, installing an SDK, creating a client, and calling the Messages API with a user message. That is a sensible first task for a developer deciding whether Claude fits a summarization, drafting, or question-answering feature. The SDK handles common request headers; the API documentation also explains direct REST calls and authentication.
Once a basic response is working in your application, the platform supports streaming output and additional API patterns such as token counting and asynchronous batches. Batch processing is a better fit for work that does not need an immediate answer than a user-facing chat request. The pricing documentation says model usage is metered by input and output tokens, with feature-specific adjustments; the batch endpoint has a documented discount relative to standard token rates. Do not assume one model or feature price applies to every call.
This is a developer API, not the consumer Claude chat application. Usage limits are organized into tiers and model availability depends on supported regions. The pricing guide says new users receive a small amount of API credit to test, which is not a permanent free plan. Estimate costs using the selected model, token volume, caching or batch behavior, and any server-side tools before moving an integration into production.
Strengths
- The Messages API and official SDKs provide a documented route from a first request to a conversation integration.
- Separate endpoints cover asynchronous batches, token counting, model discovery, and file handling.
- The pricing guide documents token-based billing and feature-specific cost behavior.
Watch out for
- Using the direct API requires a Claude Console account and an API key or configured workload identity.
- Usage limits and costs depend on the selected model, feature, and organization tier.
Best for
- Adding Claude model responses to an application through REST or an official SDK
- Processing a large set of non-urgent prompts with an asynchronous batch workflow
- Building applications that need streaming, tool use, or token counting
