What it does

MH Riley's Spending Tracker records income and expenses across personal accounts. Its optional Budget Mode follows a fixed allowance instead of simply comparing income with outgoings. Basic tracking is free, with paid Pro features available in the Android, Apple and Windows editions.

Choose Settings > Time Period to match the period you want to track. The current Android and Apple versions include Biweekly, alongside daily, weekly, monthly and yearly views. Settings also lets the monthly period start on a chosen day.

Turn on Budget Mode in Settings and enter the allowance for that period. Use + Expense or + Income on Summary to add transactions, or the plus icon on Transactions. Each entry needs a date, amount and category; a note is optional. Income entries increase the period's allowance, so they affect the amount shown as remaining.

Carry Over creates a green transaction for unused money from the previous period. The date arrows let you inspect an earlier period without changing the underlying entries.

Pro and file exports

The US iPhone store lists Pro Upgrade at US$2.99. On iPhone, repeating transactions and exports require Pro. CSV files can be opened in a spreadsheet; the export control lets you choose the date range before Export Now. The Android edition also supports CSV, with PDF output and device synchronization identified as Pro features.

Strengths

  • Category reports can switch between monetary amounts and percentages.
  • The home-screen widget provides quick buttons for adding entries.

Watch out for

  • Synchronizing between Android, Apple and Windows editions requires the relevant upgrade on each platform.
  • The free app contains advertising.

Best for

  • People tracking an allowance over a two-week pay cycle
