What it does

Playtype publishes retail families including Optik, Primo Serif, Publish and Rialta. It also develops commissioned typefaces for brands, cultural projects and public identities.

The commission archive shows how a font responds to a particular brief. Sounds Right uses a variable height axis in a display face, while MobilePay’s Paytype extends an existing identity into application text. These are commissioned examples; use the retail catalog to choose fonts available for a separate project.

Optik’s page provides a style selector, a size control, paragraph examples and a character display. Compare its broad proportions and diagonally cut terminals in both a headline and running text. Trial files are available for mockups and pitches, but the trial licence excludes every final project, including noncommercial work.

Desktop, web and application licences have either a one-time fee or an annual subscription. Self-hosted webfonts must be served with the licensed domain’s own assets, without a third-party font-hosting service. The full EULA also distinguishes ordinary desktop use from extended commercial distribution, so clarify merchandise or publication plans before buying. Website purchases provide an immediate font download, followed by an email containing the licence confirmation, receipt and future download link.

Strengths

  • Documents custom projects with their communication goals and design decisions.
  • Retail pages show both display and paragraph settings.
  • Emails purchase documents and a link for later downloads.

Watch out for

  • Self-hosted web licensing prohibits third-party font-hosting services.
  • Trial fonts cannot appear in final work.
  • Commercial distribution may require extended desktop rights.

Best for

  • Brand typography and custom font briefs
  • Designers comparing retail type with commissioned case studies
